Winter & Spring Spey Fishing Equipment
Other Links:

Spey rods can be extremely effective for swinging flies on the Sandy, Clackamas,
Hood, and Oregon Coast Rivers. The ability to cast with limited back casting room is
a huge advantage. In addition, spey rods allow the angler to control the speed of the
fly. This is critical for winter and spring fishing in cold water conditions. The
mending control of two-handers allow for the fly to "hang" in the slot for as long as
possible. This gives the fish a chance to commit to the fly without having to leave the
safety of deep water. When fishing sink-tips and big flies, we really like a 12'6 to 14'
for a #7 to #9 weight Spey rods rigged with an Airflo Skagit Compact.

Dressing for the climate:
Winter and early spring can be cold and wet. Boot-foot breathable waders, while not
necessary, are a luxury on cold winter days. We do recommend cleats for the
Clack. A pair of Stream Cleats can be the difference between an enjoyable day and a
cold swim. You'll want to layer with fleece and synthetic long underwear. Fleece
gloves and hat are a must. A Gore-tex shell will keep you warm and dry in the worst
of weather. A full change of clothing stored in a dry bag can save the day in the case
of an unexpected baptism.
