Klickitat River Guided Fly Fishing Trip Equipment

Spey rods can be extremely effective for swinging flies on the Klickitat. The ability to
cast with limited back casting room is a huge advantage. In addition, spey rods
allow the angler to control the speed of the fly. This is critical on the Klick. Most days,
the fish hang tight to the outside of bends in the deep troughs. The mending control
of two-handers allow for the fly to "hang" in the slot for as long as possible. This
gives the fish a chance to commit to the fly without having to leave the safety of deep
water. Furthermore, because the water has glacial origins, it can run cold and
slightly off color. The river actually fishes better when it has some color to it. While
dry flies on wet flies rigged on floating lines definitely have their place on the Klickitat
River, sink-tips and large, weighted flies can be necessary to find the fish. When
fishing sink-tips and big flies, we really like a 12'6 to 14' for a #7 to #9 weight Spey
rods rigged with an Airflo Skagit Compact. Floating lines like Airflo's Scandi
Compact should be at hand if the conditions allow for there use.

If you're not a spey rod junkie, a 9 to 10' for a #7 or #8 weight single-hand rod is the
perfect stick for dead-drift techniques from the boat. We really like Rio's Nymph
Taper fly line for this style of fishing. The line really helps turn-over indicator rigs with
weight on the leader. This is a popular way to fish the tight slots Klickitat steelhead
love to hold in. While it lacks the grace and beauty of Spey fishing, it's a fun way to
fish the river and accounts for the greatest number of steelhead landed on the
Klickitat.
Single-Hand Equipment
Rods: 9' to 10' for a #7 or #8 weight rod
Reels: Large Arbor with 100 yards of backing
Fly Line: Weight forward floating, nymph taper preferably
Leaders: 10' Rio Steelhead and Salmon in 10lb.
Tippet: Rio 1X, 2X flourocarbon
Indicators: Large yarn indicotors or Thingamabobber
Weight: BB split shot
Flies: 10mm and 8mm Trout Beads, Glo Bugs, Nuke Eggs in shades of orange, red,
and pale pink. Weighted stone flies, caddis, and leeches.
Dressing for the climate:
The Klickitat Valley's weather can vary depending on the time of the season.
September can be T-shirt weather while November can drop below freezing. Please
come prepared! Breathable waders are essential for comfort. Because we fish out
of a raft or drift boat, we don't recommend cleats for the Klickitat. We do allow them if
you feel more comfortable wading. You'll want to layer with fleece and synthetic long
underwear. Fleece gloves and hat are a must in late fall. A Gore-tex shell will keep
you warm and dry in the worst of weather. A full change of clothing stored in a dry
bag can save the day in the case of an unexpected baptism.
